A new hatch and a folding timber ladder were fitted to give proper access to the loft, replacing an arrangement that meant hauling yourself up through the opening. The ladder folds away above the hatch, so nothing is on show in the hallway when it is closed.
A safety rail around the opening
The part of this job worth pointing out is inside the loft. A timber guard frame was built around the opening, so when you come up the ladder there is something solid to take hold of, and a barrier between you and the drop back down through the hatch. Most loft ladder installations stop at the ladder. Standing at the top of one in a dark loft with a hole at your feet is exactly where accidents happen, and it is the difference between access you will actually use and a loft you avoid going into.
Hatch and finish
The hatch itself sits flush and square to the ceiling, with the facing run round the opening to leave a clean line below. From the hallway it reads as a neat panel in the ceiling; the ladder and the rail only appear when you open it.

Should a loft ladder have a safety rail?
There is no requirement for one in a domestic loft, but it makes a real difference. Coming off a ladder into a dark loft with an open hatch behind you is the risky moment, and a guard frame around the opening gives you something solid to hold and a barrier at the edge.
Can you fit a loft ladder in a narrow hallway?
