A continuous oak handrail was fitted the full length of the staircase, from the bottom step through to the landing, on chrome brackets. It runs on the wall side, so it gives something to hold on both the way up and the way down.
Why a mopstick
A mopstick is the rounded profile you can see — near circular, so your hand closes right round it. That matters more than it sounds. A flat or heavily moulded rail gives you something to rest a hand on; a mopstick gives you something to actually grip if your footing goes. It is the profile normally recommended where a handrail is there for support rather than decoration.
Fixing it properly
The brackets are the part that counts. Each one is fixed back into something solid rather than just into plaster or board — a handrail that pulls off the wall the first time someone puts real weight on it is worse than no handrail at all, because it is trusted. The rail was set at a consistent height above the pitch line of the stairs and the end cut and finished neatly rather than left square.

What height should a stair handrail be?
Generally around 900mm above the pitch line of the stairs — the imaginary line running across the nosings — and kept consistent the whole way up. What matters most is that it stays at the same height relative to the steps, so your hand does not have to hunt for it.
Can a handrail be fitted to a plasterboard wall?
Yes, but the brackets have to be fixed back into the studs or into proper fixings rather than just the board. A handrail is only useful if it will take a person's full weight suddenly, which is exactly when it is needed.
What is a mopstick handrail?
