Flooring Cut Around New Boiler Pipework in Dreghorn

After a boiler was installed, the floor was left open around the new pipework. The decking was cut and scribed tightly around five copper pipes so the floor closed up properly instead of being patched with an offcut.

The job after the job

New boiler, new pipework, floor lifted to run it. What gets left behind is a gap around five pipes coming up through the deck. Heating engineers are not joiners and it is not their trade to make it good — but somebody has to, or the floorcovering goes down over a hole.

Scribing around five pipes

The pipes are not in a straight line and not evenly spaced, so the board has to be marked to the actual positions rather than measured off a tape. A profile gauge pressed against the pipes copies the shape exactly, that outline gets transferred to the board, and it is cut to suit. The result closes up tight to each pipe with no daylight round the edges.

Why it matters underfoot

A patched floor sounds and feels different when you walk on it. Boards cut properly and supported at the edges stay solid and quiet. Whatever goes down on top — vinyl, LVT, laminate — is only ever as good as the deck under it.

Scope of works

Common questions

Who makes the floor good after a boiler is fitted?

Usually a joiner. Heating engineers lift what they need to run pipework, but cutting the floor back in around it is joinery. It is worth having it done properly before any floorcovering goes down.

How do you cut flooring around pipes neatly?

With a profile gauge — it presses against the pipes and copies their exact shape and spacing, which then gets transferred to the board. Measuring with a tape rarely works when the pipes are not evenly spaced.
