Door Canopy Propped and Gallows Bracket Replaced in Irvine
The canopy running across the front of this Irvine home was carried on gallows brackets, one of which had failed. The whole canopy was propped on acrow props and a timber spreader so the failed bracket could be taken out and replaced, then set back down onto its supports.

Taking the weight off first
Nothing was touched until the canopy was properly supported. Acrow props were set on a timber sole plate to spread the load across the paving, with a second timber spreader running the full width under the canopy so the weight was shared rather than concentrated at two points. Only then could the old brackets come out. This is the whole job in one photograph — the canopy is a heavy, tiled structure fixed to the wall at just a couple of points, and once you remove those points it is going nowhere but down.
Replacing the failed bracket
With the canopy held, the failed bracket was cut out and a new one fitted in its place. Because the canopy is carried at more than one point, the new bracket has to sit at exactly the right height and projection — if it is even slightly out, the canopy is left bearing unevenly and the load goes somewhere it was never meant to.
Set back down and finished
New brackets in, canopy back down onto them, and everything painted to match the existing white detailing. From the pavement it looks like nothing ever happened, which is exactly the point — the finished result of structural work like this should be invisible.

Common questions
Do all the brackets need replaced, or just the failed one?
It depends on the condition of the others. They are the same age and have had the same weather, so they are always worth checking while the canopy is propped — but if the rest are sound there is no reason to replace them. That is a judgement made on site once everything is exposed.
How is a door canopy supported while the brackets are replaced?
On props, with timber spreading the load top and bottom — a sole plate underneath so the props do not punch through the paving, and a beam under the canopy so the weight is shared across its width rather than pushing up at two points.
Will the repair be noticeable afterwards?
It should not be. New brackets are fitted to suit the canopy and finished to match the existing paintwork, so from the street it reads as original.
