Wall Panelling — Irvine, North Ayrshire
The brief
The customer wanted a panelled feature wall in the bedroom, running the full width of the wall, in a style they could paint themselves in their own colour.
How it was built
The wall is built from MDF: a flat backing with vertical battens fixed over it to form the tall panels, and a horizontal rail across the top and bottom to frame them. A moulded rail runs along the top edge to give the wall a finished line, and a new skirting was made to match the existing skirting in the room so the panelling meets the floor the way the rest of the room does. The socket on the wall was cut round and kept usable.
Why MDF for painted panelling
MDF is the right material for panelling that is going to be painted. It is flat, stable and has no grain to show through the paint, and the edges take a primer cleanly. The panelling was left with the fixings filled, ready for the customer to prime and paint, which is how they wanted it.

Common questions
Do you paint the panelling?
On this job the customer chose to paint it themselves, so it was left filled and ready to prime. It can be left that way or finished to order — say what you prefer when you enquire.
What does wall panelling cost?
It depends on the size of the wall, the panel design and whether it is being painted. Photos of the wall and a rough measurement are enough for an estimate.
Can panelling go over an existing wall with sockets?
Yes. Sockets and switches are cut round so they stay usable, and the surround is made good as part of the job.
