Setting out is the whole job
Panelling looks simple and is almost entirely setting out. The panels have to be equal, centred on the wall, and sized so they still look right where a window, a radiator or a door interrupts the run. All of that is worked out and marked on the wall before anything is cut — once the first length is fixed, the layout is decided.
Working around what is already there
Column radiators, bay reveals, sockets and returns are where panelling either works or falls apart. Mouldings have to be scribed to fit around them and the dado rail carried through so the line does not break. The alternative — stopping the panelling short and butting it up to an obstacle — is what makes a job look stuck on rather than built in.
Mitres and finish
The mouldings are cut, glued and pinned with the joints closed up tight. Filled, sanded and painted, the panelling reads as part of the wall rather than something applied to it.

Common questions
How much does wall panelling cost?
It depends on the size of the room, the style of panelling and how many obstacles there are to work around. A straight wall is quick; a room with a bay, radiators and returns takes considerably longer. Every job is quoted after seeing it.
Can panelling be fitted around radiators and sockets?
Yes — that is the part that takes the skill. Mouldings get scribed around them and the dado rail carried through so the horizontal line runs unbroken. Done properly you should not notice the obstacle at all.
Can panelling be run up a staircase?
Yes, and it is the part that catches most people out. Everything on a stair runs at the pitch of the stairs rather than level, so the panels, the rail and the mitres are all cut to that angle — and the angle at the top and bottom of the flight is different again where it meets the level run. It is the main reason stair panelling gets started as a DIY job and finished by a joiner.
Does wall panelling suit a modern house?
It does, and it is one of the most cost-effective ways to give a plain modern room some depth and character. The panel proportions can be adjusted to suit the ceiling height so it does not look like it belongs in a different era of house.
