The gate closes off the close between two houses, giving security to the back garden and somewhere to stop at the front. Openings like this are rarely a standard size, and the walls either side are rarely parallel, so a gate off the shelf either binds on one side or leaves a gap you could get a hand through.
Built to suit the opening
The gate was made to the opening rather than the opening being made to suit a gate. Getting an even line down both sides is the whole job.
Hinges and ironmongery
