Walk-In Pantry and Oak Sliding Door in Troon
A disused alcove in a Troon kitchen turned into a walk-in pantry. New stud wall built and boarded, a rustic oak sliding door hung on black running gear, and the pantry fitted out with wall and base units, a channel-lined splashback and a solid worktop.

Project overview
The starting point was an open alcove off the kitchen that was doing very little. The plan was to close it off properly, put a door on it and fit it out as a walk-in pantry — turning dead space into the most useful cupboard in the house. Because it involved building the wall as well as fitting it out, the whole thing was set out with a laser first so the new opening, the units and the door track all lined up before anything was fixed.
Building the wall and hanging the sliding door
A new stud wall was framed, boarded and finished to form the pantry opening. A sliding door was the right call here rather than a hinged one — there is no swing to allow for, so no kitchen floor space is lost and nothing gets blocked when the door is open. The rustic oak door runs on black running gear fixed above the opening, which needs a solid, dead-level fixing across the full span or the door will not run true.
Fitting out the pantry
Inside, the pantry was fitted with wall units and base units, a worktop, and a channel-lined splashback behind. Open shelving above the units keeps everyday things visible and to hand rather than buried at the back of a cupboard. The result is a proper working pantry with the door closed on it — everything to hand inside, and a clean oak door on the kitchen wall when it is shut.

Common questions
Can you turn an alcove or cupboard into a walk-in pantry?
Usually yes. If there is a recess, an old cupboard or dead space off the kitchen, it can often be closed off and fitted out. The main things to check are the depth available, how the door will work and whether anything needs moving — sockets, pipework or a radiator.
Why fit a sliding door instead of a hinged one?
A sliding door needs no swing space, so it suits kitchens and tight openings where a hinged door would foul a worktop, an appliance or a walkway. It also makes a feature of the door itself — an oak door on black gear reads as part of the room rather than just a way in.
Do you build the wall as well as fit the joinery?
Yes. On this project the stud wall was framed, boarded and finished before any of the pantry fit-out started, so it was one trade from start to finish rather than co-ordinating several.
