Internal door fitting — Irvine, North Ayrshire
The brief
The customer wanted a room divided with a new partition wall, but without losing the floor space a hinged door needs to swing into. The answer was a pocket door — a sliding door that runs on a top track and disappears into a cavity inside the wall when open, so nothing projects into either room.
Building the wall around the pocket
A pocket door has to be planned into the wall from the start, not added afterwards. The timber stud partition was framed with a proprietary pocket door kit built into it — a metal-framed cassette that forms the cavity the door slides into and carries the track — with the studs and head set out around it. The kit was fitted plumb and square before the wall was boarded, because once the plasterboard is on there is no getting back in to adjust it. The wall was then boarded and the door hung on its track.
Door and finish
The door is a white primed cottage style door with a flush recessed pull so there is nothing sticking out to catch as it slides into the pocket. White facings were fitted round the opening to finish the reveal.
Cupboard shelving
As part of the same job, a cupboard was fitted out with MDF shelves on timber bearers — four shelves cut to the width of the cupboard and fixed level, ready to be painted with the rest of the room.

Common questions
What is a pocket door?
A sliding door that runs on a top track and slides into a cavity inside the wall when open, rather than swinging on hinges. It frees up the floor space a normal door needs and works well in small rooms, en-suites and hallways.
Can a pocket door be fitted in an existing wall?
It can, but it means opening up the wall to build the cavity. It is far simpler when the wall is being built new, as on this job, because the pocket kit is framed in from the start.
Do you fit shelving as well?
Yes. Cupboard shelving, alcove shelves and built-in storage are all regular jobs and can be added to a larger project or done on their own.

From the customer
What they said afterwards
Tom recently completed work in my house and this was completely in a timely and efficient manner. We had quite a few different jobs done as part of our house renovations, including a stud wall with a sliding door, a built-in bed inside a cupboard, a new kitchen worktop and extra shelving in our pantry. From start to finish, they were professional, reliable and really took pride in what they were doing. We’re so pleased with the finished result and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable, skilled joiner. We’ll definitely be using them again for future work!
