Internal door fitting — Irvine, North Ayrshire
Project overview
The whole of the downstairs was re-trimmed in one go: every door replaced, and new skirting boards and door facings fitted throughout the ground floor.
The doors
Six oak veneered doors were hung. Four are the cottage style — vertical boards beneath a plain top rail — and two are fully glazed shaker style doors with a single clear pane, used where light needed to travel between rooms, including the door through to the hall and front door. The doors are unfinished oak veneer, supplied ready to be oiled or lacquered in whichever finish the customer prefers, and each one was fitted with a chrome scroll lever handle on a backplate.
Skirting and facings
New skirting and facings were fitted right through the downstairs in a simple modern profile, with the external corners mitred so the joint runs tight round the wall rather than showing an end grain. The white trims against the pale oak and the light flooring give the hall a clean, consistent look from the front door through to the back.

Common questions
What is the difference between unfinished and prefinished oak doors?
Unfinished oak veneer arrives bare and is oiled, waxed or lacquered after fitting, which lets you choose the tone. Prefinished doors come with the finish already applied at the factory. Both are fitted the same way.
Should skirting and facings be replaced at the same time as doors?
It usually gives the best result. New facings are cut to the new frames and the skirting is scribed in to meet them, so everything lines up and there are no old, thick paint edges to work round.
Can you mix glazed and solid doors in the same house?
Yes. Most ranges offer glazed and solid versions of the same design. On this job the glazed doors went where light was wanted between rooms and the cottage style doors went everywhere else.
