The brief
Before the work, the underside of the stairs was clad in old dark-stained boarding, with gaps opening up between the boards and a patched strip along the bottom edge. With new oak veneer cottage doors going in throughout the house, the underside of the staircase in the hallway was looking tired and out of place. The customer wanted it finished to match the style of the new doors.
What was done
V-grooved timber lining was fitted to the underside of the staircase, running the full length of the slope. The vertical boarding picks up the lines of the cottage style doors, so the stairs and the doors now belong to the same scheme rather than competing with each other.
Ready for decoration
The lining was left ready for the decorator. It is the kind of finishing touch that is often overlooked, but it is what turns a set of new doors into a properly finished hallway.

What is V-groove lining?
Tongue and groove boarding with a V-shaped groove at each joint. Fitted vertically, it gives the same boarded look as a cottage style door.
Can the underside of a staircase be panelled?
Yes. The boarding is fixed to the underside of the stair and cut to the slope. It can be painted, stained or left natural.
Do you paint it as well?
