New Cupboard Built with a Stud Wall and Oak Door in Lugton
A new cupboard formed in a home in Lugton, East Ayrshire, by building and plasterboarding a stud wall across a recess, with an oak door frame set into it and an unfinished oak cottage style door hung on antique brass hinges with antique brass ironmongery. A separate job at the same property as our earlier Lugton door fitting.

Internal door fitting — Lugton, East Ayrshire
Project overview
This job turned an open recess into a proper cupboard. A timber stud wall was framed across the opening, boarded with plasterboard, and an oak door frame was set into it during the build so the frame is fixed to the studs rather than added afterwards.
Oak frame and unfinished oak door
The frame is solid oak with an oak stop, and the door is an unfinished oak cottage style — vertical boards beneath a plain top rail — so the two can be oiled or lacquered together once the wall is finished. Hanging a new door in a frame you have just fitted yourself is the easiest way to get it right: the frame goes in plumb and square from the start, so the door closes cleanly on an even gap all round.
Antique brass ironmongery
The customer chose antique brass throughout — a lever handle on a backplate, an Eclipse tubular latch with a matching antique brass forend and keep, and antique brass hinges. Against unfinished oak the warm brass tone sits well, and it matches the ironmongery on the doors fitted elsewhere in the house.

Common questions
Can you build a stud wall and fit a door in one job?
Yes. Building the wall and fitting the frame at the same time is the best way to do it — the frame is fixed straight to the studs and the wall is boarded up to it, so the doorway is square and solid.
Do you plaster the wall too?
The joinery side is the studwork, boarding, frame and door. Skimming is a plasterer's job — mention it when you enquire and we can advise.
Can an oak frame be fitted instead of a painted one?
Yes. A solid oak frame and stop can be fitted so the frame matches an oak door and is finished in the same oil or lacquer, rather than painted white.

What they said afterwards
Tom fitted new internal doors for me. He did a fantastic job. Doors look beautiful. Not one bit of mess to clear up either! Would highly recommend. I've already given him a list of more jobs to price!
