Wall Panelling — Irvine, North Ayrshire

A return visit

This was a repeat client in Irvine — we had laid new flooring for the client earlier in the year. This time the brief was to bring the area around the kitchen entrance and the hallway leading to the front door together with half-height panelling. The walls were previously covered in a sparkle-effect wall cladding, which was carefully stripped back before any new boards went up.

Tongue and groove, ready to paint

The boards are tongue and groove with a grain-embossed face, supplied pre-primed so they only need a top coat. A laser line was used to set the height so the top of the panelling runs dead level through the kitchen, round the corners and along the hall. The light switches were taken off, then refitted and re-secured over the face of the panelling — so there are no cut-outs to see and the finish is seamless.

Corner trims and capping

The kitchen entrance has two boxed-in piers either side of the opening, which is where most of the work was. Each external corner was finished with timber corner trims, and a capping rail runs along the top of the panelling, mitred round every corner so the top edge reads as one continuous line.

Done in a day

The whole job — stripping the old cladding, setting out, boarding, trims and capping — was carried out in one visit, leaving the panelling ready for the client to paint. It was a fun one to work on, and it completely changes the feel of the entrance.

Common questions

What is tongue and groove panelling?

Boards that lock together along their edges, one board’s tongue sitting in the next board’s groove, so the wall reads as a run of vertical boards with no visible fixings.

Do pre-primed panels need painting?

Yes, but only a top coat. Pre-primed boards come with the primer already on, so once fitted they are ready for your chosen colour.

Can panelling go over existing wall cladding?

Usually the old cladding is removed first so the new boards sit flat and the trims line up properly. We will check this when we come to measure.

How long does it take?

A kitchen entrance and hallway like this was done in one visit. Larger rooms or full-height panelling can take longer, and we give a timescale with the quote.
